Chicago buyers, partners and hiring managers check your name before they call. We remove what breaks platform rules or Illinois law, suppress what cannot come down and rebuild what people find when they search for you.
Why your search results matter in a city of many industries.
World Business Chicago, the city’s economic development organization, describes Chicago as the city with the most diverse economy among US metros and focuses on five sectors where the region has an edge, from fintech and manufacturing to healthcare and logistics. That mix means the result that hurts you depends on who is searching: a trading firm worries about a forum thread, a restaurant about its map rating, a manufacturer about a supplier’s complaint.
Online reputation management in Chicago starts with a clear read of each result: which platform rule it breaks, what Illinois law says about it and what has to be pushed down instead. The United States is one of the countries where we actively work, and we work with clients in Chicago and across Illinois.

Is this company a scam? What people are saying
★★☆☆☆1.8 from 240 reviews
What we see ranking for Chicago names and businesses.
The platforms change from case to case, but these situations often rank for local brands and professionals.
Fake reviews on maps and review sites
Coordinated one-star reviews from people who were never customers pull down the rating shown next to your address. Google and the review sites remove reviews that break their rules once they are reported with the right evidence.
"Scam" questions that rank
A thread or support question titled with your name and the word “scam” can sit on page one with no proof behind it. We have had one removed and deindexed through the platform’s own review process.
Rumors about a firm’s finances
For fintech, trading and lending businesses, a false claim that a company is insolvent or about to fail can travel fast. A post that states untrue facts, rather than an opinion, often gives grounds for removal.
Old or duplicate business listings
A Google Business Profile from a previous location or brand that you no longer control, still collecting reviews in your name.
Doxxing and personal attacks
Posts that publish a founder’s or employee’s home address, phone number or family details to invite harassment. Platforms remove this content under their own rules, and Illinois gives victims a civil claim.
AI answers built on the worst result
When a false thread ranks, ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews can pick it up and repeat it in the answer about your business.
Platforms where we protect reputations
The Illinois rules that shape what can come down.
Federal law, such as Section 230 and the FTC’s rule on fake reviews, sets the baseline, and Illinois adds its own deadlines and claims. This is general information, not legal advice. Media Removal is not a law firm, and for a decision about a lawsuit you should speak with a licensed Illinois attorney.
One year to sue for libel or slander
In Illinois, lawsuits for libel, slander or publication of matter that violates the right of privacy must be filed within one year after the claim accrues. Under the single publication rule, one publication supports only one claim for damages. If you may want a court order later, the clock matters from the start. [1][2]
The innocent construction rule
Illinois recognizes categories of defamation per se where harm to reputation is presumed, such as statements that someone committed a crime or lacks integrity in their job. But a statement is not defamatory per se if, read in context, it can reasonably be understood in an innocent way. That is why the exact wording of a post decides which removal route is realistic. [3]
A broader anti-SLAPP law from 2026
The Citizen Participation Act lets a defendant ask for early dismissal of claims based on protected speech or petitioning, pauses discovery while the motion is pending and awards attorney fees to a defendant who wins it. For older cases, the Illinois Supreme Court limited the Act to meritless, retaliatory suits. A 2025 amendment, which applies only to actions filed on or after January 1, 2026, adds freedom of the press, says the Act should be construed broadly and stays the other proceedings while the motion is decided. Suing a critic can cost more than the post itself. [4][5][6]
A civil claim for doxing
Since January 1, 2024, the Civil Liability for Doxing Act lets a person sue someone who intentionally publishes their personally identifiable information without consent, intending it to be used to harm or harass them and knowing or recklessly disregarding that they are likely to face death, bodily injury or stalking. The publication must cause serious harm, such as significant emotional distress or a substantial life disruption. Victims can recover damages and reasonable attorney fees. [7][8]
A threatening attack page can be a felony
Illinois cyberstalking law covers creating and keeping up a website or web page, open to others for at least 24 hours, with statements harassing a person that threaten them or their family with bodily harm or solicit a crime against them. Cyberstalking is a Class 4 felony. A page like that is a matter for the platform, the host and the police, not only for suppression. [9]

How is reputation management priced for a Chicago business?
A single fake review costs less to deal with than a forum thread, a news story and a listing together, and your free assessment prices each item. Content removal is billed only when the URL is verified offline, with no retainer and no setup fee. For ongoing reputation management, the first month is contingent on the strategy we deliver in week one. If you do not see the path forward, you do not pay.
Do I need an agency based in Chicago?
No. Removal requests, platform reports and suppression work do not depend on where an agency sits. Our main office is in New York City, and we work with clients in Chicago and across Illinois.
Can you remove a negative review of my Chicago business?
When it breaks the platform’s rules or the law, for example because it is fake, posted by someone who was never a customer or states false facts. An honest opinion from a real customer usually stays up, and in that case we suppress it and strengthen the accurate content around it.
Should I sue the person who posted it?
Sometimes, but rarely as the first step. Illinois gives you one year to file for libel or slander, and the Citizen Participation Act can award attorney fees to a defendant whose speech is protected. Most removals run through platform policies or publisher outreach, and for a lawsuit you should speak with a licensed Illinois attorney.
How fast can a fake review or a scam thread come down?
It depends on the platform and the grounds, so your assessment gives a realistic estimate for each link. A review that clearly breaks a platform’s rules can move faster than a thread on a site that rarely removes content. Suppressing what stays up is an SEO process measured in months, not days.
