Online reputation management in the United States

In the United States, platforms are generally not liable for what their users post, so removal runs through platform rules, copyright notices or the courts. We remove what is removable at the source, suppress what is not and rebuild what people find when they search your name.

Why your page one decides deals in the United States.

Before a client signs, an investor wires or a candidate accepts, they search your name. A Reddit thread, a one-star BBB profile or an old article can answer the question before you ever get the call.

US law protects a wide range of speech, and platforms decide most takedown requests under their own rules. That is why online reputation management in the United States starts with a clear read of what each platform and each state allows, not with threats. The United States is one of the countries where we actively work, and our main office is in New York City.

  • Removal at the source where a platform rule or the law supports it
  • Suppression for what cannot come down, built on accurate content
  • Branded search and AI answers monitored, not set and forgotten
  • For content removal, you pay only after it is removed

What we see ranking for American names and brands.

The platforms change from case to case, but these are the situations US clients bring to us most.

Reddit threads on page one

A “scam” or “reviews” thread can rank fast for your brand. We handle it through Reddit’s own channels or push it down when removal is not possible.

BBB complaints and ratings

Buyers treat the Better Business Bureau as a trust check. A false or retaliatory complaint can drag the rating down and rank near the top of Google for your business name.

Fake and competitor reviews

Coordinated one-star reviews on review sites and maps listings pull down the rating people see first. Reviews that break the platform’s rules can be reported and taken down.

News articles and mugshots

Old coverage or a booking photo can follow a name for years. Some publishers update or remove stories on request, and Google has its own routes for mugshot results.

Anonymous defamatory posts

False statements of fact posted under fake names on forums, gripe sites and social platforms. The right path depends on the platform’s rules and, in some cases, a court order.

AI answers repeating the claim

ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews summarize the sources that rank. If those sources are negative, the answer about you is too.

Platforms where we protect reputations

The US rules that shape what can come down.

This is general information, not legal advice. Media Removal is not a law firm, and for a decision about a lawsuit you should speak with a licensed attorney in your state.

Section 230 shields platforms

Under 47 U.S.C. § 230, a provider or user of an interactive computer service is not treated as the publisher or speaker of information provided by someone else, and restricting access in good faith to material it considers objectionable is also protected. The shield has exceptions: it does not limit intellectual property law or impair federal criminal law, among others. In practice, a platform usually removes content because it breaks its own rules, not because it is liable for the post. [1]

Defamation is mostly state law

Defamation in the United States is governed mainly by state common law and statutes, and the rules vary substantially from state to state. A claim generally needs a false statement of fact, publication to a third party, fault and harm, and public figures must show actual malice. [2]

The FTC rule on fake reviews

The FTC’s Consumer Review Rule (16 CFR Part 465) bans fake or false reviews and testimonials, paying for reviews that express a particular sentiment and trying to suppress reviews through groundless legal threats, intimidation or certain false public accusations. A business that hides reviews on its own site because they are negative cannot present the rest as all or most of its reviews, but withholding reviews that are, for example, defamatory, harassing, clearly false, fake or unrelated to its products does not count as suppression by sentiment, as long as the criteria apply to every review. The FTC can seek civil penalties against knowing violators. [3] [4]

The Consumer Review Fairness Act

Under 15 U.S.C. § 45b, a clause in a form contract that restricts or penalizes a customer’s review of the business is void from the start. The same law preserves claims for defamation, libel or slander and a party’s right to remove content that is libelous, harassing, abusive or clearly false. Gagging reviewers in the fine print is not a reputation strategy. [5]

DMCA notices for copied material

When your photos, videos or text are reposted without permission, the notice-and-takedown process in 17 U.S.C. § 512 can apply. Hosts that receive a valid notice must act quickly to keep their safe harbor, and the uploader can file a counter notice. It covers copyright only, not statements you consider false. [6]

Questions about reputation management in United States.

Cannot find what you are looking for? Send us your question and we answer within one business day.

Send your question
How much does online reputation management cost in the United States?

It depends on how many results you need to move and how hard they are to remove. For content removal, you are billed only when the URL is verified offline, with no retainer and no setup fee. For ongoing reputation management, the first month is contingent on the strategy we deliver in week one. If you do not see the path forward, you do not pay.

Can I make Google or Reddit remove a post about me?

Sometimes. Section 230 means platforms are generally not liable for what their users post, so they act when content breaks their own rules, infringes copyright or is the subject of a court order. We identify which route applies to each link. When none does, we suppress the result instead.

Is it legal to remove negative reviews?

Yes, when the review breaks the platform’s rules, for example because it is fake, defamatory, harassing or posted by someone who was never a customer. We do not use threats, fake reviews or intimidation, which the FTC’s Consumer Review Rule prohibits. Not every negative review can come down, and we tell you which ones can.

How long does it take?

Removals depend on the platform and the grounds, so your assessment gives a realistic estimate for each link. Suppression is an SEO-driven process: many results move within a few months, while deeply entrenched content takes longer.

Do I need a lawyer to remove defamatory content?

Not always. Most removals run through platform policies, publisher outreach or copyright notices, without a lawsuit. When a court order is the only route, we tell you so, and you should speak with a licensed attorney in your state. Media Removal is not a law firm.

Is my case kept confidential?

Yes. Every client signs an NDA, and so do we.
