Is Trustpilot Legit? What Its Reviews Can and Cannot Tell You

Trustpilot is a real review platform. That does not make every review accurate or every listed business trustworthy. Here is how to assess its evidence and limits.

Is Trustpilot legit? The short answer

Yes, Trustpilot is a real review platform. Trustpilot Group plc is recorded as an active public limited company at Companies House. That answers whether there is an identifiable company behind the name. It does not establish that every review is genuine, that every moderation decision is correct, or that every business listed on Trustpilot is trustworthy.

For a business evaluating its own reputation or a supplier, the useful question is how much weight to give the evidence on a particular profile. Read the underlying experiences, check them against other information, and understand what the platform’s rules do and do not establish.

A real company and a reliable review are different questions

Trustpilot’s consumer terms identify the entities operating its platform. They also state that user opinions do not represent Trustpilot’s own views, and that the platform is not guaranteed to be error-free.

Separate three questions:

  • Does the platform exist as a real operation? Corporate records and published terms help answer that.
  • Does this review describe a genuine experience? That requires evidence about the interaction, rather than the platform’s corporate identity.
  • Is the reviewed business suitable for your company? Reviews can inform that assessment, but cannot replace checks on the business, its terms, and the service you need.

A positive profile should be one input into supplier selection. A negative review should prompt examination of the facts, rather than an automatic conclusion about the whole company.

Who can leave a Trustpilot review?

Trustpilot is an open platform. Its reviewer guidelines require an account and a genuine experience. Its business guidelines explain that an experience need not involve a purchase: a phone call, email, chat, or visit to an online store can qualify. A reviewer does not need an invitation.

That matters when a business cannot match a reviewer to an order. The absence of a purchase record does not, by itself, prove fabrication. Reviewers may also use a username that does not identify them to the business.

Look for relevant details about the experience and use the platform’s information-request and reporting channels where appropriate. Do not treat a familiar name as proof of authenticity, or an unfamiliar one as proof of fraud.

Invitation and verification labels describe the platform’s review process. Do not interpret them as regulatory approval of the business or official certification of the claims in a review.

Does Trustpilot have fake reviews?

Trustpilot acknowledges fake reviews and describes systems intended to detect them. Its Trust Report 2025, covering 2024 activity, describes fake reviews it detected and removed. This is the platform’s account of its work, not an independent audit or a measure of every false review that may have existed.

The report describes automated checks before publication, subsequent investigations, user reports, and human involvement in escalations and appeals. Those measures explain the process; they do not establish that any individual review is accurate. A published review has not become a court finding about what happened.

Likewise, a review being removed does not establish that every complaint about the business is false. Assess the disputed content and the reason for the decision separately.

Can businesses pay Trustpilot to remove negative reviews?

Trustpilot states that businesses cannot pay it to change their score or remove reviews. It sells business tools, but says the same fraud detection and moderation apply to invited reviews as to other reviews. This is the platform’s stated policy, rather than an independent finding about every decision it makes.

A subscription and a moderation decision answer different questions. To understand the commercial side, read how Trustpilot makes money. For the portal itself, see what Trustpilot Business does. Neither payment status nor a paid feature is proof that a particular review is true or false.

How to assess a Trustpilot profile in practice

For a company checking a supplier or reviewing its own public presence, use a consistent reading process:

  1. Check the business and domain. Confirm that the profile concerns the entity and service you are assessing.
  2. Read beyond the headline score. Compare recent favorable and unfavorable accounts, the service discussed, and the business’s responses.
  3. Separate details from conclusions. An order date, described interaction, or response may help you investigate; a confident accusation alone does not settle the facts.
  4. Seek corroboration. Compare the issues with information you can check directly, such as contract terms, delivery records, or your own dealings with the supplier.
  5. Record uncertainty. Treat unusual timing or repeated wording as a reason to look closer, rather than proof of manipulation.

These are assessment steps, not a method for certifying a profile. For other review channels, see our review sites directory. To compare providers, use Trustpilot alternatives or the narrower REVIEWS.io vs. Trustpilot comparison.

To organize your team’s observations across search results, reviews, and AI answers, use the business reputation self-assessment. It summarizes your answers rather than checking a company or certifying a profile.

What if your company believes a review is false?

Preserve the review URL, text, dates, and relevant business records. Then identify the specific rule you believe it breaches. Under Trustpilot’s business guidelines, a business can flag suspected violations and challenge a decision. Disagreeing with an opinion does not by itself justify removal.

Respond to genuine feedback professionally and avoid publishing private customer information. If the dispute involves legal allegations, involve your lawyer. A reputation provider cannot decide a legal dispute or promise Trustpilot’s response.

Our Trustpilot review removal service explains how we assess individual reviews. Our Trustpilot profile service addresses a separate concern: the company’s public profile. Moving to another review provider does not delete the existing Trustpilot page. To discuss your company’s situation, request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trustpilot a real company?

Trustpilot is a real review platform, and Companies House records Trustpilot Group plc as an active public limited company. Corporate existence does not verify the accuracy of an individual review or endorse a business reviewed on the platform.

Can I trust every Trustpilot review?

No platform record makes every review reliable. Trustpilot requires genuine experiences and describes fraud detection and reporting processes, but it also acknowledges fake reviews. Read individual accounts and compare them with information you can verify.

Does a reviewer have to buy something first?

Not necessarily. Trustpilot allows reviews based on genuine experiences broader than a purchase, including certain calls, emails, chats, or visits to an online store. Not finding an order is not enough, on its own, to prove that a review is fake.

Can paying businesses delete negative reviews?

Trustpilot says businesses cannot pay it to change their score or remove reviews. Businesses can flag suspected guideline breaches. A negative opinion alone does not establish grounds for removal.

Does a high Trustpilot rating prove a supplier is safe?

A rating should inform your assessment, not replace it. Check the supplier, the particular service, contract terms, and the facts behind relevant reviews. A public profile is not a substitute for your company’s own checks.

Will leaving Trustpilot remove my business profile?

Choosing another platform does not delete the existing Trustpilot profile or reviews. Trustpilot says a profile can remain visible without being claimed. Requests about a profile or individual content need separate assessment.
