Summaries of each platform's published review policies, checked on November 4, 2026. Platforms change their rules and forms often; the linked official page is the authority. Media Removal is not affiliated with these platforms. This is general information, not legal advice.
A negative review is not a reason for removal on any major platform. What gets a review taken down is a breach of that platform's own rules: a fake or conflicted review, harassment, private information, spam or, in some cases, a court order. This reference summarizes those rules for 20 platforms, with links to the official pages, so you can see whether a review qualifies and where to report it.

Google Business Profile (Google Maps reviews)
Covers: Reviews and ratings on Google Maps and on Google Business Profiles shown in Search.
Google says any review can be reported, but only reviews that violate its Maps content policy are eligible for removal, such as fake or conflict-of-interest reviews, off-topic rants, harassment or personal information. Business owners can report reviews from their Business Profile or the Reviews Management Tool, check the status there and file a one-time appeal. Google allows content that describes negative experiences in a respectful manner.
What it removes
- Fake or not genuine
Google says contributions must reflect a genuine experience at a place or business, and fake engagement is not allowed and will be removed. This includes content not based on a real experience, content that does not accurately represent the location, and content posted from multiple accounts by or at the request of one person.

Who can report
Google's Maps help explains how to report a review from the business's Reviews section on a computer or in the Google Maps app. Business owners can also report reviews on their own Business Profile or through the Reviews Management Tool; Google says any review can be reported, but only those that violate its policies are eligible for removal.

What it will not remove
Google's policy allows content that describes negative experiences in a respectful manner. It says only reviews that violate its policies are eligible for removal, advises owners not to report reviews just because they disagree with or dislike them, and says it doesn't get involved in disputes between businesses and customers.

If the review stays up
If a review an owner reported isn't removed, the owner can submit a one-time appeal through the Reviews Management Tool, selecting up to 10 reviews; while it is under review the status shows Escalated - check your email for updates. Google emails the result: reviews that violate policy are removed and compliant reviews stay live. People who report through Google Maps may be eligible to submit one appeal if the content isn't removed.

Legal route
Google says users can report Maps content they believe violates local law, separately from its content policy. Its Report Content On Google tool asks you to choose the product, such as Google Maps, and a legal reason, such as defamation or a court order; a policy report does not serve as legal notice, so each must be filed separately.

Can the reviewer edit or delete it?
Reviewers can edit or delete their own review from Your contributions > Reviews in Google Maps, and an edited review shows the date of the last edit. Google's policy says merchants may not offer incentives to revise or remove negative reviews.

Responding publicly
A business must verify its profile before replying to reviews. Google checks each reply against its content policies, and approved replies appear publicly under the review as the business, without the owner's personal name. The reviewer is notified and can still change their review.
Penalties for fake or solicited reviews
If Google determines that a business violated its Fake Engagement policy, it may, in addition to removing the reviews, place restrictions such as blocking new reviews for a set period, unpublishing existing reviews for a set period, or showing customers a warning that fake reviews were removed. Google says it emails owners before applying a restriction, and businesses can appeal.

Yelp
Covers: Reviews of businesses on Yelp.
Yelp's moderators remove reviews that break its Content Guidelines, such as conflict-of-interest or incentivized reviews, reviews not based on the writer's own consumer experience, and threats, hate speech or private information. Yelp says it generally lets users stand behind what they write and doesn't take sides in factual disputes. Separately, its automated recommendation software decides which reviews are recommended; that is not removal, since not-recommended reviews stay accessible on the page.
What it removes
- Conflict of interest
Yelp may remove a review if the reviewer appears to be a competitor, a current or former employee or otherwise affiliated with the business, or a friend, family member or peer of the owner, even if they insist they were an uninfluenced customer.

- Incentivized
Yelp may remove a review if the reviewer was paid or otherwise incentivized to write it. Its guidelines also say businesses should never ask customers to write reviews.

- Spam or advertising
Yelp may remove a review if the reviewer is promoting the business or a competitor. Its guidelines restrict promotional content to Yelp advertising products posted through a business account.
SourcesYelp Support Center, When should I report a review?Yelp, Content Guidelines
- Not based on a real experience
Yelp may remove a review that isn't based on the reviewer's own consumer experience, for example one that describes someone else's experience, relies on what the reviewer heard from a friend or saw in the news, is about a different business, only mentions the business's hours, offerings or policies, or mainly disputes another Yelper's review.

- Off-topic
Yelp's guidelines say reviews are not the place for rants about political views, a business's employment practices or other unrelated circumstances, and should cover the specific location the reviewer visited or contacted.

What it will not remove
Yelp says anything that came up in a reviewer's interactions with the business is generally fair game, including general impressions such as the attitude of employees or the ambiance, and that colorful language and occasional profanity are allowed. Reporting a review doesn't guarantee removal, mere suspicion of bias usually isn't enough, and Yelp doesn't take sides in factual disputes. Reviews its recommendation software doesn't recommend remain accessible through a link at the bottom of the business page, and no Yelp employee can override the software.

Yelp's guidelines say a reviewer can edit a review within 30 days of posting it to add insight about the same experience, and that later updates should reflect a new experience with the business.

Responding publicly
Owners with a claimed business page, an approved profile photo and an approved business account name can respond publicly below a review or send the reviewer a direct message. Yelp encourages owners to respond publicly or directly to inaccuracies in a review.

Penalties for fake or solicited reviews
Yelp places Consumer Alerts over a business's reviews when it has evidence that someone offered cash or other incentives for reviews, after investigating suspicious review activity, or when a business may be abusing the legal system to intimidate or silence a reviewer. After an unusual spike in activity, such as one driven by media attention, it may show an Unusual Activity Alert and temporarily disable posting.
EU notices under the Digital Services Act
Yelp's Digital Services Act page says people can report content they believe is illegal under EU law through its in-product reporting tools or a dedicated web form, and that no out-of-court dispute settlement body has yet been certified as to Yelp.
Trustpilot
Covers: Service reviews of businesses on Trustpilot.
Trustpilot removes reviews that breach its guidelines or where it is legally required. Businesses can flag a review for one of five reasons: harmful or illegal, personal information, advertising or promotional, not based on a genuine experience, or about a different business; consumers have similar reasons. It says it won't remove a review just because a business dislikes or disagrees with it. For some reasons the business first asks the reviewer to fix the problem or share information within 3 days, and can then flag the review to Trustpilot's Content Integrity Team if it isn't resolved.
What it removes
- Hate or harassment
Under harmful or illegal content, Trustpilot can remove content that negatively targets people or a group of people based on who they are, such as their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race or gender.

Businesses can claim their profile and reply to reviews. Trustpilot asks that replies be polite and professional and says replies containing personal information, threats or aggressive language will be removed.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)
Covers: Customer reviews on BBB Business Profiles; BBB complaints follow a separate process.
BBB vets customer reviews and sends them to the business before they are published: it checks that a marketplace interaction took place, removes inappropriate language and personal information, and does not accept anonymous or compensated reviews. A business that believes it never interacted with the reviewer can challenge the review, and BBB then asks the reviewer to substantiate the interaction. BBB says it cannot guarantee the accuracy or truthfulness of any single review, and complaints, unlike reviews, cannot be deleted once submitted.

Penalties for fake or solicited reviews
When SmartCustomer confirms a business has violated its Review Integrity Policy, it sends a formal warning and publishes the warning's status in the Business Activity section of the business's profile. After three confirmed violations, it removes the business's SmartCustomer rating and applies a permanent banner to the profile.

Glassdoor
Covers: Company, interview and benefits reviews about employers on Glassdoor.
Glassdoor says it removes reviews that break its Community Guidelines, including reviews it has evidence were incentivized or coerced, but it never removes content simply because it is negative and employers cannot pay to have reviews removed. Reviews should be the reviewer's own honest opinion and experience with a current or former employer.
- Incentivized
Glassdoor says it removes content when it has evidence that users were incentivized or coerced into leaving it.

What it will not remove
Clutch says it does not arbitrate disputes and will not take down reviews just because they are negative; absent highly unusual circumstances, which it decides, it errs on the side of transparency. A dispute is considered only if the provider believes the entire project described in the review is fictional; a provider who disagrees with a real client's review should submit a response instead.
SourcesClutch, Review GuidelinesClutch Help Center, Can I Remove a Review From an Unrecognized User?
How long it takes
In a dispute over an unrecognized reviewer, the reviewer has 2 weeks from the initial dispute to provide evidence of the collaboration. Clutch does not publish a review time for other reports.
SourceClutch Help Center, Can I Remove a Review From an Unrecognized User?
Legal route
Clutch's Terms of Service say users may expose themselves to liability if they submit false, misleading or defamatory content, and must indemnify Clutch for claims alleging defamation. Clutch reserves the right to reject, edit or remove any user content in its sole discretion.
SourceClutch, Terms of Service
Can the reviewer edit or delete it?
Clutch does not allow reviewers to delete their reviews. They can submit an updated review if substantial additional work was completed or the sentiment of the partnership changed, and the original content stays listed below the newer review.
Responding publicly
Providers can submit a response of up to 300 words to a client review on their profile; Clutch may shorten it to fit the limit before publishing it under the original review. The Review Guidelines say responses should be respectful, constructive and factual.

Penalties for fake or solicited reviews
Clutch audits providers suspected of violating its Terms of Service by re-verifying every review on their profile. Confirmed violations can lead to removal of falsified reviews, suspended account access, loss of profile verification without a refund, and loss of promotional opportunities; its Terms also say Clutch may publicly notify buyers through its Buyer Alerts Program when a user manipulates feedback, for example by asking reviewers to edit or delete their review.

Tripadvisor
Covers: Reviews of hotels, restaurants, attractions and other travel listings on Tripadvisor.
Tripadvisor removes reviews that break its Community Standards & Guidelines or contain illegal content, and says that simply disagreeing with a review is not enough to justify removal. Listing managers report reviews from the Management Center, and Tripadvisor says its moderators notify them of the outcome and their appeal options in the next 3-5 working days.
What it removes
- Not based on a real experience
Reviews must describe the author's own first-hand experience with the business. Tripadvisor says it removes reviews that contain second-hand information, such as quotes from the media or accounts from people outside the traveling party, with limited exceptions.
- Conflict of interest
Tripadvisor does not accept reviews from people affiliated with a property, including current or former employees, relatives or friends of staff or owners, and suppliers. Owners and employees of a business in the same category may not review others in the same municipality or within 10 miles (16 km).
- Fake or not genuine
Tripadvisor treats reviews submitted by property representatives, reviews written on behalf of guests, and bought, sold or exchanged reviews as attempts to manipulate rankings. It says it may remove such content and penalize the property.
- Incentivized
Offering or promising anything in exchange for a review, whatever the rating, is against Tripadvisor's guidelines, as is rewarding employees for encouraging reviews.
- Off-topic
Tripadvisor removes substantial comments on political or religious preferences, ethics or wider social issues that are not relevant to travel, and says political or religious commentary that turns into a rant may be removed. Reviews that only dispute a property's stated policies or comment only on opening hours are not posted, and unanswered calls or emails are not treated as a valid description of the service.
SourcesTripadvisor, Review GuidelinesTripadvisor, Content & Community Guidelines
- Hate or harassment
Tripadvisor does not host content that promotes intolerance or incites hatred based on characteristics such as race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or nationality, and does not allow personal insults.
- Threats or violence
Content saying that people should be harmed, even as sarcasm or exaggeration, and content glorifying structural harm to a property, such as threats of bombing or fires, will be removed.
- Private information
Tripadvisor removes private or confidential information posted about others, such as non-public email addresses, door codes or credit card numbers. It does not allow the full names of other individuals, with listed exceptions such as owners, managers, executives and some employees.
- Profanity or obscene language
Tripadvisor asks contributors not to use vulgar or profane terms and may remove terms that are extremely offensive in any geography.
- Illegal content
Tripadvisor will not publish content that promotes or describes personal participation in criminal activity that is illegal where the business is located. Anyone who believes content is illegal can report it for review.
SourcesTripadvisor, Content & Community GuidelinesTripadvisor Help Center, How Do I Report Content That Doesn't Meet Tripadvisor's Community Guidelines or Is Illegal?
- Spam or advertising
Tripadvisor removes reviews posted to promote the contributor's own business, and does not allow content included mainly for commercial reasons or links with referrer tags or affiliate codes.
- Other
Content plagiarized or copied from other sources is removed, and Tripadvisor says review content generated by artificial intelligence is not permitted.
- Duplicate
Each user may write one review per experience or visit to a business. Tripadvisor may remove duplicate submissions to the same listing from multiple accounts, and posts a review describing the same experience on two listings only to the most relevant one.
- Outdated
All reviews must be submitted within one year of the experience.
- Other
Listing managers and travelers can report a review that may be posted in the wrong location. Tripadvisor says a review is removed if it does not correspond to a business listed on the site.
SourcesTripadvisor Help Center, Owners Reporting a ReviewTripadvisor, Review Guidelines
- Other
Tripadvisor treats a bad-faith attempt by a traveler to get something of value by threatening a negative review, or by promising to remove one, as blackmail. Owners must report a specific published review and provide unedited documentary evidence of the threat.

Legal route
Tripadvisor says anyone who believes content on the site is illegal can report it to its staff for review, and that it removes content it finds in violation.
Can the reviewer edit or delete it?
Reviewers can delete their own review from their profile, but reviews cannot be edited; to update one, the reviewer deletes it and submits a new one. Tripadvisor says it does not facilitate direct contact between owners and reviewers, and that offering anything for, or pressuring a user into, removing a review breaks its guidelines and is met with penalties.

Responding publicly
Tripadvisor lets business representatives post one management response to each review from the Management Center, shown alongside the review. It says responses that meet its guidelines may take up to 2 days to be posted.
Penalties for fake or solicited reviews
Tripadvisor says that if it finds fraudulent reviews for a business, the business's popularity ranking may drop, it will no longer be eligible for recognition such as Travelers' Choice awards and Top 10 lists, and a red penalty notice may appear on its listing. Properties that contractually prohibit or discourage negative reviews get a warning badge until that policy is discontinued.

Booking.com
Covers: Guest reviews of accommodations booked through Booking.com.
Booking.com says it does not publish reviews that breach its guidelines, and its Partner Hub lists the specific situations in which a property can ask for a review to be removed, such as a guest who canceled and didn't arrive, a review of the wrong property or written evidence of blackmail. Only customers who booked through Booking.com can review, and a guest who arrives but doesn't stay can still leave a review.
What it removes
- Not based on a real experience
A property can ask for removal when the guest canceled and confirmed they didn't arrive, when the property canceled at least 24 hours before the scheduled check-in, when it canceled on the planned day of check-in due to an invalid credit card, or when the reservation is marked as a no-show and the review doesn't detail the guest's experience.

Healthgrades
Covers: Patient reviews of doctors and other healthcare providers on Healthgrades, which Healthgrades also calls patient satisfaction surveys (a nine-question survey that can include an open-text comment).
Healthgrades says it reviews free-text comments against its business and privacy rules before posting them, and its Editorial Policy lists the kinds of user content it will not post. Avvo
Covers: Client reviews of attorneys on Avvo lawyer profiles.
Avvo says only people who actually hired or consulted with an attorney may review them, and that it removes reviews that violate its Community Guidelines, such as reviews from opposing parties, staff, colleagues, family or friends. It does not investigate or arbitrate the underlying facts, so a review that reflects a genuine client experience and follows the guidelines stays up even if the attorney disagrees. Attorneys dispute reviews through Avvo Customer Care, which may contact the reviewer.
What it removes
- Not based on a real experience
Under the Community Guidelines, only people who hired or consulted with the attorney outside of Avvo may review them. Avvo will not post reviews that appear to be for attorneys the reviewer did not consult for their own representation, such as the lawyer on the other side of a matter or one representing a spouse or family member; opposing parties, their relatives and non-clients are not eligible.

- Conflict of interest
Reviews must come from actual or potential clients. Avvo says reviews from staff, colleagues, family or friends who are not clients will be removed.

- Other

They are not permitted where those interests are not aligned or the attorney acts as a neutral, which most often arises in probate, mediation, arbitration and guardianship matters.
- Hate or harassment
The Community Guidelines ask users not to engage in name-calling, threats, general rudeness or putting down of others, harassment, or displays of bigotry.

The guidelines ask people not to give out personal information such as home or email addresses, telephone numbers, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers or passwords in questions, reviews or comments.

What it will not remove
Avvo says it will not remove a review that reflects a genuine client experience and follows its guidelines, even if the attorney sees the situation differently. It does not verify, investigate or arbitrate the underlying facts, and it says payment or an advertising relationship does not change how reviews are handled.

Legal route
Avvo does not disclose who wrote an anonymous review outside of a formal legal process. It says subpoenas for reviewer information are handled under Internet Brands' Terms of Use and Release of Information policy, subject to judicial review and applicable First Amendment standards, and that under Section 230 it hosts reviews rather than speaking them.

Responding publicly
